About This Show
Back by popular demand, this distinctive production brings Jonathan Green’s Gullah-inspired paintings to life through original choreography, vivid design, and theatrical imagination. Praised by The New York Times as “fabulous… an ingenious idea… striking,” the ballet transforms Green’s vibrant visual world into movement, music, and stagecraft.
Originally premiered in 2005, Off the Wall and Onto the Stage grew from a collaboration between Artistic Director William Starrett and acclaimed South Carolina artist Jonathan Green. Drawing from 22 of Green’s paintings, Starrett created a series of vignettes exploring themes of family, faith, hope, and love.
Green’s rich palette is carried onto the stage through striking backdrops and scrims, more than 150 hand-sewn costumes, and a musical score that blends traditional work songs, gospel, Motown, classical, and jazz.
Featuring choreography by William Starrett and a live choir.
Presented by the state’s largest professional ballet company, Off the Wall and Onto the Stage honors the cultural heritage of the Gullah and Geechee communities that inspired Green’s work while showcasing South Carolina Ballet’s signature blend of classical technique, storytelling, and theatrical design.
A celebrated South Carolina work of art returns to the Koger Center stage for one night only.
